NEW ORLEANS – After leading the Salisbury University men's track & field team to another successful meet at the George Mason University Open Patriot Games, senior Luke Campbell continues to be recognized for his effort. The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association named Campbell the NCAA Division III Men's National Athlete of the Week, as he continues to put himself at the top of the nation in his events, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Campbell tallied two first-place finishes at the Patriot Games on Saturday, taking over the top spot in the country in both the 400-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles. He finished the 400 in 49.07 seconds, which was only .02 seconds off of the Salisbury program record, just after notching an 8.04-second effort in the 60 hurdles.
He also helped the Gulls' 4x400-meter relay team to third place in the race with a 3:21.17 finish; that time currently ranks fourth in the country.
This marks Campbell's first National Athlete of the Week award this season.
