Sea Gulls get set for outdoor national championships

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's and women's track & field teams are getting set for the 2015 NCAA Division III outdoor national championships, as the Sea Gulls are sending eight athletes to compete in a eight combined events. The championship meet is set to span from Thursday, May 21 through Saturday, May 23; the Gulls' first event is set for Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

100-meter dash

Senior Tyler Austin is making his second-straight appearance in the NCAA championships, which includes his second time competing in the 100-meter dash. He qualified for the event with the sixth-best time in the country with a time of 10.53 seconds in the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference championships. In the 2013 outdoor championships, Austin finished 16th in the 100-meter dash.

200-meter dash

This year's championship meet marks the second time that Austin has raced in two events in an outdoor championship, as he also qualified in the 200-meter dash. In 2013, he also ran in the 200-meter dash, placing 18th. Austin qualified for this year's championships with the 15th-best time in the country, running the race in 21.52 seconds at the Christopher Newport New Captains' Classic. He is running in his third-straight outdoor championship meet this season, finishing 19th in the 200 dash last season.

110-meter hurdles

Junior Luke Campbell is making his third-straight appearance in the NCAA outdoor championships and is looking for his third-straight title in the 110-meter hurdles. Campbell holds the top time in the country, qualifying for the championships with a 14.07-second race at the Colonial Relays. Last season in the championships, he set the school record and the third-fastest time in Division III history with a 13.82-second race to take the title.

400-meter hurdles

Campbell also qualified for the 400-meter hurdles, looking to defend his national championship in that event, as well. He currently sits at No. 3 in the country with a 51.82-second time from the CAC championships. Last season, Campbell broke the school record in the 400 hurdles, as well, with a 50.36-second race, while setting the fourth-best time in Division III history.

Senior Devon Hopkins will be joining Campbell in the 400 hurdles for the second-straight season, also competing in the championship meet in 2014. Hopkins qualified with the seventh-best time in the nation, running the event in 52.53 seconds in the CAC championships. Last season, Hopkins placed 11th in the title meet.

4x100-meter relay

Campbell and Austin will be joined by freshmen Jerel Madison and Zach Schmelz in the 4x100-meter relay in this year's championships. The team comes into the meet with the 11th-best time in the nation of 41.24 seconds, which the unit set in the Salisbury University Elite Final Qualifier. The Sea Gulls have run the 4x1 relay three times this season, finishing in the top 10 each time.

4x400-meter relay

Campbell will be running in his fourth event in the 4x400-meter relay, as he will team with Hopkins, Schmelz, and freshman Eric Halton. The team set a school record at the CAC championships with a time of 3:14.03 to qualify for the national championships with the No. 13 time in the country.

High Jump

Sophomore Meghan McGowan, coming off of an All-American performance in the 2015 indoor national championships, qualified for the outdoor championships with a school-record 5' 8" leap at the CNU New Captains' Classic. The height is tied for fourth in the country entering the title meet. This is the first appearance in the outdoor championships for McGowan.

Shot Put

Senior Dylan Burkett is making his second-straight outdoor championship appearance in the shot put for the Sea Gulls. He qualified for the championships in the final meet of the season with a 54' 5.5" heave in the Salisbury Elite Final Qualifier. Burkett is ranked 15th in the country with the throw. Last season, Burkett finished 14th in the outdoor championships.
