Sea Gulls take three CAC Athlete of the Week awards after first meet

YORK, Pa. – The Salisbury University men's and women's track & field teams opened their 2014-15 seasons on Saturday with the Christopher Newport University Holiday Open, and three Sea Gull student-athletes were named Capital Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week for their efforts in the meet, the league announced on Tuesday.

The women's team saw three school records fall during the event, including two by sophomore Ashley Jackson in the long jump and the triple jump, earning the Elkton, Maryland native CAC Field Athlete of the Week.

Jackson's best finish came in the triple jump, taking fourth with a 37' 1.25" effort, which broke former Sea Gull Tara Greco's mark of 35' 4.5". Her finish in the triple jump currently ranks fourth in Division III. She began the day tying for a 10th-place finish in the long jump (16' 8.5"), passing Lindsey Metzler's 16' 2.5" mark.

The Sea Gull men's team swept this week's conference awards, as junior Luke Campbell was named the CAC Track Athlete of the Week and senior Dylan Burkett was named the CAC Field Athlete of the Week.

Campbell tallied SU's best finish of the meet, taking first in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.17 seconds, after notching an 8.08 second time in the preliminary race. Campbell's preliminary time ranks second in the country in Division III. He also ranks second nationally in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.76 seconds, which earned him a seventh-place finish on Saturday, and he helped the Gulls take second in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:27.87, which now sits fourth in the country.

Burkett also notched two top-10 finishes for Salisbury in the meet, placing fourth in both the shot put and the weight throw. He began his day with a 51' 9" toss in the shot put, before following with a 52' heave in the weight throw. Burkett currently sits fourth in the shot put and eighth in the weight throw nationally with the efforts.

The Sea Gulls will be back in action after the holidays, beginning the new year at the Collegeville Classic at Ursinus College on Friday, January 23; the meet is set to begin at 3 p.m.
