Sea Gulls set for NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships beginning Thursday

DELAWARE, Ohio – In less than five years, the Salisbury University track & field teams have earned nine individual national championships. The Sea Gulls look to increase that total this weekend, as four student-athletes will compete in five events at the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships at Ohio Wesleyan University starting on Thursday.

Last Time at the Championships

Two of the Sea Gulls making the trip to Delaware, Ohio are return competitors, as sophomore Luke Campbell and junior Tyler Austin competed at last year's championships where Campbell earned his second national championship and Austin got his first taste of the national stage, qualifying in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Campbell Defends His Crown

Campbell, in less than two years, has earned four All-American awards and two national championships. He won the 110-meter hurdles last season and was crowned a national champion this past indoor season in the 60-meter hurdles. He is just the third student-athlete in men's track & field history at Salisbury to win two titles, joining Brandon Fuggett in the shot put (2009 and 2010 outdoor) and Corey Beebe in the 400-meter hurdles (2009 and 2010). Campbell will look to become the first Salisbury student-athlete in any sport to win three individual national championships, competing in the 110- and 400-meter hurdles this week.

Austin Looks for First Title

This weekend marks Austin's third national championship appearance. At the 2013 outdoor championships, he ran in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, but failed to qualify for the finals in either event. At the indoor championships earlier this year, Austin ran in the 60-meter dash, qualifying for the final and collecting his first All-American honor, placing seventh. He will run in the 200-meter dash at this weekend's championships, looking to take the next step.

First-Time Competitors

Juniors Devon Hopkins and Dylan Burkett will compete in their first national championship this weekend. Hopkins enters the 400-meter hurdles and Burkett will be the only field competitor for Salisbury, in the shot put.

The Schedule

Campbell, Hopkins, and Austin will get things started on Thursday, May 22, as the three will have their first qualifying races. Campbell and Hopkins will run in the 400-meter hurdles qualifying round at 6:45 p.m., while Austin will run the 200-meter dash prelims at 7:15. Burkett will compete in the shot put finals on Friday at 2:15 p.m., while Campbell will be Salisbury's only competitor on the track on Friday, running his 110-meter preliminary race at 6:45 p.m. On Saturday, the three track finals will take place, beginning with the 110-meter hurdles at 2:40 p.m. The 400-meter hurdles will go off an hour and a half later, at 4:10 p.m., followed by the 200-meter dash at 4:35 p.m.
