YORK, Pa. – The Capital Athletic Conference announced its weekly track & field awards and Salisbury University had two athletes named, as junior Thomas Burke was honored for his efforts this past weekend at the Captains' Invitational as the CAC Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, and freshman Meghan McGowan was honored for her efforts as the CAC Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week.
Burke won one event and claimed a pair of second-place relay finishes at the meet, including helping break a school record.
Burke won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.56, which stands as the second-fastest time in Division III this season.
In a pair of relay races, Burke helped his team finish second, including breaking a school record, which had stood since 2006, in the distance medley relay. Burke ran the 800-meter leg of the race as he and teammates juniors, George Martinez and Brandon Horning, and sophomore Ian Wood ran the race in 10:29.14, for the sixth-fastest time in the nation this year. The quartet was the top Division III finisher in the field.
Burke also helped Salisbury's 4x400-meter relay team to a second-place finish, in 3:26.87. As the top Division III team in that event, the Sea Gulls were less than a second from the race win.
McGowan set a school record in the high jump with a height of 5' 6", breaking the previous record, which stood since 2007, by an inch and a half. With that height, she was the top Division III finisher and placed second overall in the event; it also stands at No. 4 in the nation, this season.
Burke, McGowan and the Salisbury teams will return to action this Saturday, Feb. 1, when they travel to the John Covert Classic, hosted by Lehigh University.
