NEW ORLEANS – Leading into the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced its regional award winners on Wednesday and Salisbury University senior Chelsea Tavik was named the Mideast Region Women's Field Indoor Athlete of the Year.
Tavik competed in the shot put and weight throw at five different meets this season, winning the shot put on three occasions, the weight throw twice and finishing no lower than fifth in any event this indoor season.
The Glen Burnie, Md., product's top effort in the shot put this season came this past weekend at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier, as she broke her own school record with a heave of 47' 6.5". That distance ranks Tavik fourth in the nation entering the national championship meet.
The defending national champion in the indoor shot put, Tavik will make her fifth national championship appearance this weekend, between indoor and outdoor seasons combined.
Tavik is the first regional Athlete of the Year for Salisbury since Cory Beebe and Brandon Fugett were named Mideast Track and Field Outdoor Athletes of the Year, respectively, in 2010.
The 2013 indoor championships will be contested at North Central College on March 8-9. The women's shot put will be on Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m., central time.
