BLACKSBURG, Va. – A handful of Salisbury University track & field student-athletes traveled to the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier on Saturday, looking to secure a spot in next week's NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships. The contingent made the trip home with strong performances and three new school records.
Senior Claire Lawrence broke a school record for the second week in a row, taking down the school mark in the 800-meter run, which had stood since 2005, with a time of 2:21.37. She placed fifth in the event on Saturday.
Sophomore Thomas Burke, off his record-breaking performance in the 1,000-meter run last week, broke the school mark in the 800-meter run on Saturday, placing fourth in the event, with a time of 1:54.79. Classmate Ian Wood took seventh in the event, with a time of 1:56.25.
Senior Chelsea Tavik broke her own school record in the shot put, with a fourth-place finishing effort of 47' 6.5". The mark is nearly eight inches better than her previous school record, which she set while winning last season's national championship in the event. Tavik also placed fifth in the weight throw on Saturday, with a top distance of 50' 11.5".
Freshman Kyle Tockman came up just three seconds short of a fourth school record, running the mile in 4:22.22.
Sophomore Richard Newman and classmate Tyler Austin placed eighth and 10th, respectively, in the 200-meter dash. Newman completed the race in 22.34 seconds while Austin was just behind at 22.83 seconds.
Newman also placed second in his heat in the 400-meter dash, running the event in 50.06 seconds, while Austin ran the 60-meter dash in 7.10 seconds, and came up just shy of qualifying for the finals in that event, by .004 of a second.
Salisbury entered the weekend with Tavik (shot put) and freshman Luke Campbell (60-meter hurdles) in contention to qualify for the national championships next week. The pair will now wait until Monday morning when the NCAA will announce the field in each event.
The NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held March 8 and 9 in Naperville, Ill.
