Salisbury claims five CAC indoor awards, 30 All-CAC honors

YORK, Pa. – On the heels of first- and second-place finishes at the recent Capital Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, the Salisbury University men's and women's track & field teams claimed 30 all-conference honors, along with five of the six possible individual awards, the league announced on Wednesday.

The men earned 20 All-CAC nods, including a clean sweep of the individual awards, after claiming the program's second CAC indoor championship. Senior Jacob Adedeji was named the CAC Athlete of the Year, freshman Luke Campbell was named Rookie of the Year and Head Coach Jim Jones was named the Coach of the Year. The women were honored with 10 All-CAC performers while senior Chelsea Tavik was named the CAC Athlete of the Year and Lauren Snyder earned Rookie of the Year honors.

First- and second-team all-conference honors are designated by top-two finishes in a given event at the CAC championships. Individual awards for Athlete, Rookie and Coach of the Year are determined by a vote of the league's coaches.

Adedeji earned two first-place finishes, in the 200-meter dash and the high jump, and placed second in the 60-meter dash on his way to his first Athlete of the Year award. Campbell was part of SU's winning team in the 4x400-meter relay and took second-team honors in the 60-meter hurdles. The Brunswick, Md., native also placed third in the 400-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash.

The Coach of the Year Award for Jones is his second in indoor, having claimed the honor last season on the women's side. With his awards in indoor and outdoor track & field, as well as cross country, Jones has earned CAC Coach of the Year honors 24 times.

The women's Athlete of the Year award is the fourth of Tavik's career. She swept the indoor and outdoor award in the CAC last season and was named the Athlete of the Year for the outdoor season in 2011. At this season's indoor championship, Tavik defended her CAC titles in the shot put and weight throw. Snyder was part of the CAC champion 4x400-meter relay team while placing third in the 200-meter dash and fifth in the 400-meter dash.

Adedeji and Campbell accounted for three of Salisbury 13 first-team All-CAC awards on the men's side. Sophomore Thomas Burke earned a pair of first-team selections with wins in the 800-meter run and the distance medley relay, as he teamed with junior Matthew Hallenbeck and freshmen Ian Wood and Jarrell Young.

Sophomores Blake Bussard, Devon Hopkins and Richard Newman joined Campbell at the top of the podium for their win in the 4x400-meter relay. Salisbury's other two first-team performances came in the throwing events with sophomore Dylan Burkett winning the weight throw and classmate Ryan DiPascale earning the victory in the shot put.

Synder and Tavik accounted for three first-team honors on the women's side. Snyder was joined by juniors Kara Tolson and Alex Greissinger and sophomore Brooke Schulz for the win in the 4x400-meter relay. Tolson collected the other two top finishes for the women, with wins in the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash.

A handful of Sea Gulls, including Campbell and Tavik, will travel to the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier this Saturday while the rest of the team will open the outdoor season by hosting the Lloyd Sigler Invitational at the SU Track.

Salisbury will play host to the CAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships this season, on May 4 and 5.
