Three Sea Gulls claim CAC Athlete of the Week awards

YORK, Pa. – The Capital Athletic Conference released its Track & Field Athletes of the Week on Tuesday and for the second time this season, Salisbury University student-athletes collected three of the four awards, following their performances at Saturday's Thomson Invitational, hosted by the University of Delaware.

Freshmen Luke Campbell and Xavier Stinson combined to sweep the men's awards while senior Chelsea Tavik earned the seventh Athlete of the Week award of her career.

Campbell was named the league's track Athlete of the Week after his second collegiate meet in which he broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles. Campbell's time of 8.43 seconds was .01 of a second better than his previous school record, which he set in early December. Campbell won the 60-meter hurdles, an event which included 25 competitors, he placed eighth out of 80 runners in the 200-meter dash (23.22 seconds) and helped the 4x400-meter relay team place fifth.

Stinson, the CAC's field Athlete of the Week, claimed the men's high jump competition, clearing a height of 6'6", coming up just 1/4" shy of setting another school record. Stinson bested a field of 22 competitors for his first collegiate win.

Tavik, the defending indoor national champion in the shot put, began her defense of that crown with a win in the event, which featured 52 other competitors, with a top distance of 44' 3.5". Tavik also finished third, out of 30 student-athletes, in the weight throw, with her best heave covering 49' 2.5". Her two top-three finishes led to her being named the CAC's field Athlete of the Week.

The Sea Gulls return to action this Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Frank Colden Invitational, hosted by Ursinus College, at 9 a.m.
