YORK Pa. – Salisbury University sophomore Whitney Handy, junior Chelsea Tavik and senior Jay Drenner have been named the Capital Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Track & Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
Handy was part of Salisbury's school-record-setting 4-by-400-meter relay team at the Penn Relays. The time of 3:59.49 marked the first time the Sea Gulls broke the four-minute barrier in the race.
Tavik earned her fifth CAC weekly honor after topping all Division III competition in the all-division Women's Shot Put Eastern event. Tavik, whose best mark was 46' 10.25", finished seventh overall.
Drenner claimed his seventh CAC weekly honor as he broke his own record in the hammer throw for the fifth straight week. Drenner was the Division III leader in a 22-athlete field, placing 11th overall with a toss of 175' 5". His heave marked the first time an SU athlete has reached the 175-foot plateau.
Salisbury next heads to Frostburg State University to compete in the CAC championships on May 5-6.
