YORK, Pa. – The Capital Athletic Conference released its weekly awards on Wednesday and Salisbury University track & field student-athletes collected four awards for their performance at the Wake Forest Open this past weekend.
Senior Jennifer Houghton was named Female Field Athlete of the Week while sophomore Kara Tolson claimed the Female Track Athlete of the Week award. Seniors Jay Drenner and Chris Barnard earned the awards on the men's side with Drenner being named Field Athlete of the Week and Barnard claiming co-Track Athlete of the Week.
Houghton broke the school record in the hammer throw, which had stood since 2005, covering a distance of 150' 2".
Tolson broke her own school mark in the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 25.51 seconds. The award is her third of the season, having been named Track Athlete of the Week on Dec. 6 and Feb. 14.
Barnard also broke his own record, bettering his top time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by nearly eight seconds. He placed second in the race with a time of 9:20.55.
Drenner earned his third award this season (also named Field Athlete of the Week on Dec. 6 and Jan. 31) with an eighth-place finish, against primarily Division I competition, in the hammer throw. Drenner's distance of 167' 3" came up just 17 inches short of the school record which has stood since 1994.
The teams will be back in action on March 31, when they travel to the Towson University Invitational.
