NEWARK, Del. – Salisbury University junior Chelsea Tavik won two events and bested her own school record in the shot put as the men's and women's indoor track & field teams traveled to the Thomson Invitational, hosted by the University of Delaware, for the teams' first meet of 2012.
The women earned 102 points to place fifth overall and third among Division III schools at the event while the men grabbed 66 points for a fifth-place finish among the Division III schools and ninth overall.
Tavik had a top distance of 46' 0.75", a foot and a half better than her previous school record, in the shot put and also won the weight throw competition with a distance of 51' 2.75". Senior Jennifer Houghton was second in both events, with a top heave of 36' 11" in the shot put and 49' 1.5" in the weight throw.
Sophomore Kara Tolson took a pair of top-three finishes, placing second in the 200-meter dash, with a time of 27.47 seconds, and taking third in the 60-meter dash (8.25 seconds).
Salisbury's other victory on the day came on the men's side as senior Jay Drenner won the weight throw with a distance of 54' 1". He also placed third in the shot put with his best throw covering 46' 6.75".
Senior John Fitzgerald took a second-place finish in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:04.10 while freshman Tyler Austin placed third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.79 seconds.
The Sea Gulls will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 4 when they travel to Newport News, Va., for the Vince Brown Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport University.
