YORK, Pa. - The Capital Athletic Conference announced its weekly award winners and Salisbury University sophomores Chelsea Tavik and Matt McCurdo were named Women's and Men's Field Athletes of the week, respectively.
Tavik shattered her school record in the shot put by more than two and a half feet to finish ninth against NCAA Division I, II, and III competitors at the Penn Relays. Her toss of 44' 7.5'' was an NCAA Division III provisional-qualifying mark.
McMurdo recorded an NCAA provisional-qualifying distance of 195' 0'' in the javelin at the Penn Relays. His ninth-place performance in the event, competing against NCAA Division I, II, and III student-athletes, was two inches better than his previous personal record this season and two centimeters shy of advancing to the Penn Relays final round.
The Sea Gulls' next meet is scheduled for Saturday when they will travel to Newport News, Va., to participate in the New Captains' Classic.
