Sea Gulls notch a top finish in second day of West Chester Invitational, prepare for CAC Championships

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Salisbury University track and field team wrapped up the second and final day of the West Chester Invitational in fine fashion, notching an additional first-place finish and a slew of top-10 placements.

Salisbury's field events paved the way for the maroon and gold, as the Sea Gulls' only top finish of the day came from a thrower on the women's squad. Freshman Chelsea Tavik (Glen Burnie, Md.) took home top honors in the women's shot put with a distance of 12.17 meters (39' 11.25"), followed closely by teammate Jennifer Houghton (Mt. Laurel, N.J.), who placed second with a throw of 11.87 meters (38' 11.5). Sophomores Rachel Holtzman (Columbia, Md.) and Holly Defnet (Poolesville, Md.) placed fourth and fifth in the shot put, with distances of 10.33 meters (33' 10.75") and 9.95 meters (32' 7.75"), respectively.

The shot put wasn't just a successful event for the women; in fact, the men's side saw two of its top-10 finishes in the event. Sophomore Zach Means (Westminster, Md.) took home fourth place with a throw of 13.01 meters (42' 8.25"). Sophomore Jay Drenner (Eldersburg, Md.) finished just three inches behind Means with a toss of 12.93 meters (42' 5.25"), earning him fifth place on the day.

Junior Brandon Lane (Hillsborough, N.J.) had a great day both in the field and on the track as he took home fifth place in the high jump (1.80 meters = 5' 10.75") and placed seventh in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 17.21 seconds. The Sea Gulls' highest finish on the men's team came in the 3000 meter steeplechase, as sophomore Chris Goulart (Frederick, Md.) crossed the line with a time of 10:19.20 for a second-place finish.

The maroon and gold now set their sights on the Capital Athletic Conference Championships, which they will be hosting, on April 17 at 10 a.m.
