School records fall at Virginia Tech Last Chance meet; several Sea Gulls qualify for NCAA championships
BLACKSBURG, Va. - While the Salisbury
University track and field team was opening up its outdoor season,
hosting the Salisbury University Spring Classic this afternoon, a
few members of the men's team were finishing up some business from
their indoor seasons. Because of their outstanding performances
today, some of their seasons will last even longer, concluding at
the NCAA Division III Indoor Track National Championships.
Several members of the men's team participated this afternoon in
the Virginia Tech Last Chance Meet, and with great success. Three
school records fell to go along with one athlete running an NCAA
automatic qualifying time and two others qualifying
provisionally.
Senior sprinter Delannie Spriggs
(Owings, Md.) not only received an automatic bid to
the championships with his 60-meter dash performance, but he
crushed the school record with a time of 6.77 seconds. His time was
good for ninth place.
The 4x400 meter relay record also fell this afternoon, as the team
of sophomore Paul Moore (Odenton,
Md.) and seniors Michael Marfut
(Hagerstown, Md.), Quentin
Briscoe (Windsor Mill, Md.) and Cory Beebe (Medina,
Ohio) posted a fourth-place finish and a time of
3:22.71. Beebe wasn't finished breaking school records, though, as
he ran a blazing 49.05 second 400-meter dash and took home seventh
place. The time also qualified Beebe provisionally for the NCAA
championships.
In the field, senior Brandon Fugett (Randallstown, Md.) continued to dominate the circle, posting a sixth-place finish with a throw of 53' 11". That distance exceeded the NCAA provisional qualifying standard; however, Fugett already hit an NCAA automatic qualifying mark earlier in the season, so his trip to the championships is guaranteed. Salisbury's provisional qualifiers will have to wait until tomorrow to find out if they have been selected to participate.
The NCAA Division III Indoor Track Championships will be held on March 12-13 at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind.
