Fugett wins discus; Sea Gulls earn 16 top-10 finishes at Maryland Terrapin Invitational
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Salisbury University track and field team stayed in state Saturday to take part in the Maryland Terrapin Invitational, coming back across the bridge with 16 top-10 finishes including a win in the men’s discus by senior Brandon Fugett (Randallstown, Md.).
Fugett had a big day placing in the top two in three different events. Along with a 156’ 8” toss in the discus, for the win, Fugett also put up a 54’ 1 1/4” shot put distance and a 161’ 6” heave in the hammer throw. Both finishes were good for second place.
Fugett’s performances helped the Sea Gulls collect 40 points as a team and finish ninth among 15 teams that put up team scores.
Senior Quentin Briscoe (Windsor Mill, Md.) and freshman Matt McMurdo (Chalfont, Pa.) each had a sixth and 10th-place finish on the day. Briscoe placed sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 43’ 6” and a 10th-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, with a time of 57.44 seconds. McMurdo’s 184’ 7” distance in the javelin competition was good for a sixth-place finish while he took 10th in the shot put with a distance of 44’ 5 1/4".
Senior Cory Beebe (Medina, Ohio) put up the fifth-best time in the preliminary round of the 110-meter hurdles (15.24 seconds), freshman Paul Herbert (Marganza, Md.) finished eighth in the triple jump (42’ 9”) and sophomore Jay Drenner (Eldersburg, Md.) took 10th in the hammer throw (137’ 4”).
The women’s team finished with 13 points, leading to a 10th-place finish (of 14 scoring teams). Senior Lindsey Metzler (Cooksville, Md.) put up a distance of 36’ 1 1/4" in the triple jump, good for a sixth-place finish, coming up less than two inches shy of a school record.
Sophomore Becca Stinner (Darnestown, Md.) placed sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:30.84 while the 4x100-meter relay team of Amy Taylor (Hagerstown, Md.), Claire Lawrence (Verona, N.J.), Amanda Zyzak (Damascus, Md.) and Metzler took sixth with a time of 50.62 seconds.
Taylor collected a ninth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (1:11.88) while freshman Chelsea Tavik (Glen Burnie, Md.) took ninth in the shot put (39’ 10”).
The teams will be back in action next Saturday, April 3, when they travel to University of Pennsylvania for the Penn Invitational.
