Sea Gulls notch two first-place finishes, two school records broken at George Mason meet
FAIRFAX, Va. - The Salisbury University track and field team hit the road on Sunday afternoon as it traveled to George Mason University to partake in the George Mason Winter Games. It was well worth the trip, as two Sea Gulls took home first-place finishes and two school records were shattered at the meet.
Senior thrower Brandon Fugett
(Randallstown, Md.) continues to dominate the shot put
circle as he notched yet another first-place finish with a toss of
16.70 meters. However, Fugett wasn't the only Sea Gull to place in
a field event for the men; sophomore Jay Drenner
(Eldersburg, Md.) took third place in the weight throw
with a distance of 13.89 meters. The Sea Gulls' other first-place
finish came from sophomore sprinter Paul Moore (Odenton,
Md.), who won the men's 400-meter dash with a blazing
time of 51.38 seconds.
It was a record-breaking day for senior Cory Beebe (Medina,
Ohio), whose 1:06.96 time in the 500-meter run was
good for third place and a spot in Salisbury's record books; Beebe
beat the previous record, which had stood since 2005, by nearly a
full two seconds. Sophomore sprinter Amanda Zyzak
(Damascus, Md.) already held a spot in the Sea Gull
record books for her 60-meter dash time of 8.29 seconds but she
blew her own record open by a full tenth of a second on Sunday,
finishing in 8.19 seconds.
Additionally, freshman Amy Taylor
(Hagerstown, Md.) took home a third-place finish in
the women's 400-meter dash, clocking in a time of 1:03.67.
The Sea Gulls will be a split squad on Saturday, March 6, as several members of the men's team will travel to Blacksburg, Va. to participate in the Virginia Tech Last Chance Meet. The rest of the team will open up the outdoor season, at home, in the Salisbury University Spring Classic. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
