Salisbury opens up indoor track season at UMES; three school records broken

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Salisbury University men's and women's indoor track teams hit the road for their first meet of the season on Friday, but they didn't have to travel far. The Sea Gulls participated in the UMES Coach O Collegiate Invitational on the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore's campus.

Salisbury certainly started the season on a high note, with two Sea Gulls smashing three different school records in field events. Senior Lindsey Metzler (Cooksville, Md.) broke both the long and triple jump records; a 4.94 meter (16' 2.5") long jump was four inches better than the previous record, set back in 2007. Additionally, her record-breaking 10.41 meter (34' 2") triple jump was good for first place in the meet. Freshman Chelsea Tavik also smashed the record in women's shot put with a toss of 11.51 meters (37' 9.25"), surpassing the old record by almost a foot.

The other first-place finish of the evening came on the track, as senior Travis Boccher (Columbia, Md.) took the top spot in the 1-mile run with a time of 4:41.29.

"This was a great gift to our coaching staff from the team as we head into the holidays and winter break," said head coach Jim Jones of the team's successful night.

The maroon and gold will have some time to rest before their next meet, the Thompson Invitational, scheduled for Jan. 30 at the University of Delaware.
