Three Sea Gulls headed to NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships
INDIANAPOLIS – The Salisbury University men’s track & field team got the official word that three student-athletes will represent the school at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships as the participant list was released Sunday night.
Seniors Delannie Spriggs (Owings, Md.), Brandon Fugett (Randallstown, Md.) and Cory Beebe (Medina, Ohio) all have national titles to their names and will head to Baldwin-Wallace College for the championships, which begin on Thursday, May 27, looking to collect at least one more. Last year the trio earned two individual titles and a second-place finish which was good for a fourth-place finish as a team, traveling as one of the smallest contingents at the championships.
Beebe will be the top-seeded athlete in the men’s 400-meter hurdles event. He posted one of top times in Division III history in the event at the Georgia Tech Invitational on May 15. That time qualified him for the 2010 USATF (U.S.A. Track & Field) National Championships in late June. The Medina, Ohio native is the defending national champion in the 400-meter hurdles. He will also take a stab at the 110-meter high hurdles this week, qualifying seventh with a time of 14.49 seconds at the Capital Athletic Conference Championships on April 17.
Spriggs, who claimed his national championship in the 55-meter dash during the indoor season, will look to add an outdoor championship later this week. Spriggs will enter as the third-highest seed in the men’s 100-meter dash with a top time of 10.52 seconds, which he achieved at the Penn Relays on April 23. The Owings, Md., native also qualified in the 200-meter dash, with his top time of 21.55 seconds coming at the Mason-Dixon Outdoor Championships on May 1.
Fugett will defend his shot put title, as he posted the top Division III distance in the shot put this year with a heave of 57’ 10.5” at the Penn Relays. Fugett is a three-time All-American and will look to add a fourth award and another national championship to that resume this week.
Fugett will have the first chance to claim the championship as he will compete in the shot put on Friday afternoon. Beebe and Spriggs will have trials on Thursday and Friday before the finals of their events on Saturday afternoon.
The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio May 27-29.
