Three Sea Gull standouts named USTFCCCA All-Americans
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released its Division III All-Americans on Tuesday, and three members of the men’s track & field team found themselves on the list. The announcement comes as no surprise to the three athletes, as the top eight finishers in each event at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships earn All-America honors.
But those Sea Gulls didn’t need eight places to earn the title of All-American; in fact, two of them captured first place in their respective events to become individual national champions. Senior Cory Beebe (Medina, Ohio) took the top spot at the podium in the 400-meter hurdles, successfully defending his 2009 title to finish out his Sea Gull career as a two-time national champion and four-time All-American. He also earned All-America honors for his performance in the 110-meter hurdles, placing sixth.
The second individual national champion was senior Brandon Fugett (Randallstown, Md.), who also defended his 2009 title, in the men’s shot put, by blowing the competition away and winning the event by over a foot and a half on the last throw of his collegiate career. Fugett steps out of the circle as a two-time national champion and four-time All-American.
Senior sprinter Delannie Spriggs (Owings, Md.), who captured his own national championship in the 55-meter dash during the indoor season, placed second in the 100-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash to take home his sixth and seventh All-America honors. He leads the program with those seven All-America honors, followed closely by Beebe and Fugett with four apiece.
The three seniors dominated in all facets of their careers as Sea Gulls, including outside competition as well as the Salisbury record books. The men’s program boasts 23 All-American awards; 15 of them belong to Beebe, Fugett or Spriggs.
