Metzler, Beebe honored as CAC Athletes of the Year, Tavik tabbed as Rookie of the Year

YORK, Pa. – The Salisbury University track & field teams came away from the Capital Athletic Conference championship meet last weekend with two team titles and 39 All-Conference performances. On Friday, they got even more good news as the conference released its annual awards and the Sea Gulls came away with a pair of Athlete of the Year awards, one Rookie of the Year and a Coach of the Year honor.

Senior Cory Beebe (Medina, Ohio) was named the Men’s Athlete of the Year and sophomore Lindsey Metzler (Cooksville, Md.) was named the Women’s Athlete of the Year. It marks the first such award for each athlete. Freshman Chelsea Tavik (Glen Burnie, Md.) was named the Women’s Rookie of the Year and Jim Jones was named the Women’s Coach of the Year for the first time in his tenure.

Beebe won three individual events (110 meter hurdles, 400 meter hurdles and 400 meter dash) and ran the anchor leg of the gold medal winning team in the 4x400 meter relay, leading Salisbury to its 12th men’s CAC title. Metzler was named All-Conference in four events as she won the long jump and was part of the winning 4x100 meter relay team and placed second in the high jump and triple jump.

Tavik, who has been rewriting the Salisbury records books in her first collegiate season, won both the shot put and javelin competitions. Tavik’s and Metzler’s performances were key in Salisbury winning its first CAC title, and doing so by more than 80 points, leading to Jones garnering his first Women’s Coach of the Year award. It marks just the second time a Salisbury coach has won the award on the women’s side, with Cliff Latham earning the nod in 1997. Jones has won the men’s award five times.

Sophomores Jennifer Houghton (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) and Amanda Zyzak (Damascus, Md.) both earned three all-conference awards for the women. Houghton won the hammer throw and was named second team all-conference in two events (discus and shot put). Zyzak earned first-team honors in both the 200 meter dash and the 4x100 meter relay and took second team honors in the 100 meter dash.

Senior Lauren Foreman (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and freshman Claire Lawrence (Verona, N.J.) each earned two all-conference awards.

Beebe led a handful of athletes on the men’s side with multiple all-conference honors. Senior Brandon Fugett (Randallstown, Md.) won three events (shot put, discus and hammer) and has now reached 10 all-conference awards in his career while senior Quentin Briscoe (Windsor Mill, Md.) was part of the winning 4x400 meter relay team and took second in the 110 meter hurdles and 400 meter hurdles to earn three all-conference nods of his own.

Senior Delannie Spriggs (Owings, Md.) collected his own pair of first team all-conference performances in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.
