School records fall for Sea Gulls at Wake Forest Open
WINSTON SALEM, N.C. - The Salisbury University men's and women's track and field teams had several strong finishes at the two-day Wake Forest Open held Friday and Saturday at Kentner Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest University. The meet featured 40 different schools from all three NCAA divisions including NAIA and over 1,200 student-athletes.
Junior Delannie Spriggs made his outdoor season debut fresh off his All-American showing in the 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field championships last weekend. Spriggs tied his school record of 10.57 seconds in the 100-meter dash as he won the preliminary race on Friday. His time provisionally qualified him for the 2009 NCAA Division III national outdoor championships. On Saturday, Spriggs won the event with a time of 10.79 seconds. Senior Justin Acker finished eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.12 seconds on Saturday. The day before Acker tied a personal record with a time of 10.77 seconds as he finished third in the preliminary race.
Two-time All-American Cory Beebe did well in the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles. He finished third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.79 seconds which meets the NCAA provisional mark. He placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdle event with a time of 53.66 seconds. His time was hampered when he hit the eighth hurdle during the race.
Junior Brandon Fugett, like Spriggs, made his outdoor season debut fresh off his All-American performance at the NCAA indoor nationals in the shot put. The Randallstown, Md., native provisionally qualified for the outdoor championships as he set a new school record in the shot put with a toss of 51 feet, two and three-quarters inches (15.61 meters). Fugett also competed in the hammer throw where he finished 18th overall with a toss of 40.90 meters.
Sophomore Brandon Lane was the top Division III performer in the triple jump as he finished fifth overall as he traveled 13.82 meters. Salisbury's 4x100 meter relay team placed fourth behind three Division I teams with a time of 41.95 seconds. The relay team consisted of Acker, Spriggs, junior Wayne Turner and freshman Paul Moore.
On the women's side, sophomore Masha Berge had the top finish for the Sea Gulls as she placed seventh in the 10,000 meter run as she set a new personal record with a time of 40:09.82 minutes. Junior teammate Emily Hammonds finished 13th in the same event (43:28.07). Junior Jenn Bulger finished fourth in the high jump "B" event as she cleared 1.53 meters. Bulger finished behind three Division I jumpers.
Salisbury will next compete in the Maryland Terrapin Invitational on Saturday, March 28, on the University of Maryland College Park campus.
