Three school records fall at Vince Brown Invitational, Spriggs hits NCAA provisional mark

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Salisbury University indoor track and field teams had to break out the pencil and eraser three times on Saturday as three school records were broken at the Vince Brown Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport University at the Freeman Center.

The three records broken matches what the Sea Gulls accomplished last season at this invitational. This is also the second straight week that a school record has fallen. No team scores were recorded in this invitational that featured a slew of Division I and Division III schools.

Junior Brandon Fugett crushed his toss from a week ago in the weight throw by over four feet to set a new school record with a toss of 52 feet, 7.5 inches. The previous record was held by Brandon Field who set the mark back in 2004 with a throw of 52 feet, 3.75 inches. Fugett now holds the record for both indoor throwing events as he broke the shot put record last week at the Thomas Invitational in Newark, Del.

Senior Bobby Price broke his own school record, set last season, in the high jump by one inch as he eclipsed 6 feet, 6 inches to rewrite the record book. Price broke the record last season as he cleared 6 feet, 5 inches.

While he did not break his own school record junior Delannie Spriggs did provisionally qualify for the NCAA championships in the 55-meter dash as he sprinted across the finish line in second place with a time of 6.47 seconds. The National Championship Indoor Track and Field meet will be held on March 13 and 14 at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind. This is the second-straight year that Spriggs has qualified to compete in the meet and has an opportunity to repeat as an All-American. Spriggs became the first-ever indoor track and field All-American in program history last season as he finished fourth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.35 seconds (school record).

Freshman Holly Defnet rounded out the group that set new SU records. She only needed two meets in her young career to set the school mark in the triple jump. Defnet hopped, stepped and jumped an incredible 10.04 meters (32 feet, 11.25 inches) to break the record previously held by Dana Sillers (31 feet, 7.75 inches) since ‘04.

The maroon and gold will hit the track again on Friday, February 13, as they travel north to New York City to compete in the Lafayette/Rider Invitational.
