Sea Gulls make final push for NCAA Indoor Championships at Virginia Tech Meet

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Four Salisbury University men's indoor track and field athletes had a banner day Saturday at the Rector Fieldhouse on the campus of Virginia Tech University. In the final attempt to qualify for the 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field championships the four Sea Gulls made the most of their opportunities.

Junior sprinter Delannie Spriggs broke his own 55-meter dash school record by three one hundredths of a second. Spriggs finished the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.80 seconds which converts to 6.32 seconds for the 55-meter distance. Spriggs set the old mark of 6.35 in last year's NCAA indoor championships where he earned All-American honors. Spriggs' time ties the second fastest time in the country this season and automatically qualifies him for this year's national championships which will be held March 13-14 on the campus of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind.

Senior Justin Acker finished the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.91 seconds which converts to 6.43 for the 55-meter distance. Acker's time provisionally qualifies him for the national championship meet.

Junior Brandon Fugett continues to re-write the SU indoor track and field school record book in the throwing events. Fugett broke his own school record in the shot put, by over five inches, with a toss of 51 feet, 11 and a quarter inches. The distance is the 10th best in the nation and provisionally qualifies him for the national championships.

Senior jumper Bobby Price broke his own school record in the high jump by a quarter inch as he cleared 1.99 meters which converts to six feet, six and a quarter inches.

Salisbury will next await for the NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee to announce the participants for the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships.
