Salisbury men's team wins first Mason-Dixon Outdoor Championship
FROSTBURG, Md. - The Salisbury University men's track and field team captured its first ever Mason-Dixon Conference Outdoor Championship on Saturday at Frostburg State University. The Sea Gulls accumulated 200 points during the two-day championship to win easily over Christopher Newport University, who finished second with 145 points. Salisbury's women's team finished fourth overall as the host Bobcats won the women's championship by one point over CNU, 123-122.
SU swept the three men's awards as junior Cory Beebe was named the Track Athlete of the Meet and junior Brandon Fugett took home the Field Athlete of the Meet award. Salisbury coach Kevin Lucas was named the Men's Coach of the Meet.
Salisbury won 10 of the 20 events on the men's side while the Sea Gull women earned won first-place finish. The Sea Gulls earned 30 all-conference first team selections (first, second or third place finish in an event) as the teams competed in 40 events.
Beebe stole the show on the men's side as the All-American transfer won four events for the maroon and gold. He finished first in the 400-meter dash (48.63 seconds), 110-meter hurdles (14.94 seconds), 400-meter hurdles (55.72 seconds) and the javelin (50.72 meters). Beebe's time in the 400-meter dash set a new school record. Fugett was just as impressive as he won three throwing events including the discus (44.71 meters), hammer throw (46.85 meters) and the shot put (16.14 meters).
All-American sprinter Delannie Spriggs won the 100-meter dash as he improved his season best time to 10.55 seconds, also a school record. The junior finished fourth overall in the 200-meter dash with a provisional time of 21.77 seconds. Junior distance runner Travis Boccher won the 5,000-meter run (15:50.30 minutes) and was second in the 1,500-meter run (4:07.92 minutes). SU's final first place finish came in the high jump as senior Bobby Price cleared 2.04 meters (six feet, eight and a quarter inches) to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division III outdoor championships. The Sea Gulls received a handful of second place finishes from junior Bill Nastasiak in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:01.53 minutes) and senior James Ladd in the 10,000-meter run (33:58.09 minutes). Freshman Travis Keen finished third behind Ladd in the 10,000-meter run by 22 seconds. Junior Christian Adami placed second behind Beebe in the javelin as Adami made a toss of 50.45 meters. Freshman sprinter Paul Moore finished third in the 400-meter dash (50.29 seconds) less than two seconds behind Beebe. Salisbury's 4x100 meter relay team finished second with a time of 42.32 seconds.
On the women's side, senior Jenn Bulger and freshman thrower Jennifer Houghton paced the Sea Gull attack. Houghton won the only event for the SU women as she was first in the hammer throw (37.88 meters). She finished second in the shot put (11.23 meters) and was third in the discus (33.86 meters). Bulger finished second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.23 seconds) and the high jump (1.52 meters). She placed third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.06) and was fifth in the long jump (4.94 meters). The Sea Gull 4x100 meter relay team finished third as the team crossed the finish line in 50.63 seconds.
The Mason-Dixon Conference was founded in 1936 as a track and field only conference for schools from Maryland, Virginia and D.C. Salisbury's women's team won the championship in 2007.
Salisbury will compete in the New Captains Classic in Newport News, Va., on the campus of CNU on Saturday, May 9, at 10 a.m.
