Fugett continues shot put dominance, breaks the school mark for second straight week
FAIRFAX, Va. - The Salisbury University men's and women's track and field teams sent an abridged squad across the Bay Bridge on Sunday to compete in the George Mason Last Chance Meet held on the campus of George Mason University in Northern Virginia. No team scores were recorded in the meet which included two familiar foes in Capital Athletic Conference rival University of Mary Washington and Christopher Newport University along with a mix of other Division I and Division III teams.
Several of the athletes who made the trip for the Sea Gulls posted solid results in one of the final tune-up meets of the indoor season. Junior Brandon Fugett continued his dominance in the throwing events as he took another first-place finish in the shot put and broke the school record in the event for the second straight week. Fugett left the field of throwers in the dust as he launched the shot put 51 feet, six inches to set the new school record. The toss crushed his one from a week ago at the Mason-Dixon Indoor Championships by more than five inches.
Junior Justin Acker competed in the 60-meter dash and continued to shave time off of his best mark of the season as he took a third-place finish in the event with a time of 6.97 seconds which was six one hundredths of a second better than his time from two weeks ago at the Lafayette-Rider Invitational. Senior Bobby Price finished in fourth place in the high jump as he cleared six feet, four inches.
On the women's side, senior Jenn Bulger brought home two fourth-place finishes in the high jump and the 500-meter run. Bulger cleared the bar at four feet, nine inches and finished the 500-meter run in 1:24.63. Freshman Jennifer Houghton competed in the shot put and chucked it 36 feet, 10 inches for a seventh-place finish.
The maroon and gold will have one final meet to fine tune their skills, times, marks and distances in an effort to qualify for the NCAA Division III national championships as they travel to Blacksburg, Va., on Saturday, March 7, to partake in the Virginia Tech Last Chance Meet. Salisbury will also begin its outdoor season on Saturday, March 7, at home with the Sea Gull Opener at the SU Track and Field complex slated to begin at 11 a.m.
