Fugett leads SU at New Captain's Classic, 4x400 relay sets school record

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Salisbury University men's track and field team competed in the New Captain's Classic hosted by Christopher Newport University last Saturday in Newport News, Va. The Sea Gulls took home first place in two events along with one second-place finish and three third-place finishes.

Junior thrower Brandon Fugett placed first in the shot put with a throw of 16.82 meters (55 feet, two and one-quarter inches). He was just one and a half inches short of his own school record of 55 feet, three and three-quarter inches. Fugett came in second in the discus throw with a distance of 46.12 meters.

The Sea Gulls other first-place finish came from the 4x400 meter relay team of freshman sprinter Paul Moore, junior sprinter Quentin Briscoe, junior sprinter Delannie Spriggs and junior sprinter Cory Beebe. They finished their event with a time of 3:16.41 minutes to set a new school record and provisionally qualified for the NCAA national championships.

Spriggs also had a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.85 seconds.

Sophomore Brandon Lane finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 13.74 meters. Salisbury's junior thrower Christian Adami had a third-place finish of his own in the javelin throw (50.48 meters).

The track and field team's next meet will be the SWAT Last Chance Meet at Swarthmore College on May 11 at 4 p.m. This will be their last meet of the regular season.
