Fugett, Spriggs selected to 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship field

INDIANAPOLIS - The NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced Monday, March 9, the participants in the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships which will take place March 13-14 at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana. Salisbury University will have two representatives in junior sprinter Delannie Spriggs and junior thrower Brandon Fugett who both officially qualified in their specific events.

The two Sea Gulls were among 446 participants to qualify for the championship meet. Spriggs is making his second consecutive trip to the NCAA indoor championships and is looking to improve upon last year's fourth-place finish in the 55-meter dash finals (6.35 seconds). The All-American was only one tenth of a second away from last year's national champion Eddie Bynum of Salem State College. His efforts garnered the program's first-ever All-American selection in indoor track and field. This season, Spriggs qualified for the championship meet in the 55-meter dash when he tied for the second best time in Division III (6.32). The time broke his previous school record by three one hundredths of a second.

Fugett will be making his first-ever trip to the NCAA indoor championship meet. He qualified for the meet in the shot put event following a record-breaking performance last week at the Virginia Tech Last Chance Meet. The junior broke his own school record in the shot put, by over five inches, with a toss of 51 feet, 11 and a quarter inches. The distance proved to be the 10th best throw in the nation.
