Beebe and Houghton named CAC Track and Field Athletes of the Week
YORK, Pa. - The Capital Athletic Conference
announced its weekly track and field award winners on May 5 and
Salisbury University earned two honors. SU junior sprinter
Cory Beebe was named the men's track and field
athlete of the week for the second week in a row, third time this
season, and freshman thrower Jennifer Houghton was
named the women's track and field co-athlete of the week. She
shares the award with University of Mary Washington's Brittany
Horrigan. This is the sixth CAC award for the men's track and field
program and the first CAC award for the women's program this
season.
Salisbury competed at the Mason-Dixon Conference Outdoor
Championships at Frostburg State University last weekend. Beebe led
SU men's team to it's first-ever Mason-Dixon Conference
championship as he won four events for the Sea Gulls. He took home
first place in the 400-meter (48:63 seconds), the 400-meter hurdles
(55:72 seconds), the 110-meter hurdles (14:94 seconds) and the
javelin throw (50.72 meters). Beebe was name the Track Athlete of
the Meet at the Mason-Dixon Championships and took home four
all-conference first team honors.
Houghton, the CAC Co-Rookie of the Year, captured top honors in
three events and helped the Salisbury women's team finish in fourth
place at the Mason-Dixon Championships. Houghton won SU's only
women's event in the hammer throw (37.88 meters). She finished
second in the shot put (11.23 meters) and was third in the discus
(33.86 meters). She was named all-conference first team in the
three events.
The other winners of the CAC Men's Track and Field Athletes of the
Week for the Sea Gulls are junior Brandon Fugett
(March 31, April 7) and junior Delannie Spriggs
(March 25). Beebe was honored at the start of the season on March
10 in addition to April 28.
Salisbury will be in action again at the New Captains Classic at
Christopher Newport University on May 9 at 10:00 am.
