Fugett and Lucas earn Mideast All-Region awards

NEW ORLEANS - The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its Division III Track and Field Regional Honorees and Salisbury University had two recipients honored. Junior Brandon Fugett was named the Mideast Region Field Athlete of the Year and SU first-year head coach Kevin Lucas was named the Mideast Regional Men's Coach of the Year.

Fugett, the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Year, has qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Marietta, Ohio, in the men's discus and the shot put. Fugett has managed to break two school records this spring in the same two events. The Randallstown, Md., native threw a distance of 16.82 meters in the shot put at the CNU New Captains' Classic and 49.16 meters in the discus throw at the Penn Invite. Fugett has been named CAC Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week twice this spring.

Lucas helped the Sea Gulls capture their sixth straight and 11th overall CAC championship in his first season at the helm. In addition to that the Gulls won their first-ever Mason-Dixon Conference Outdoor Championship title this spring under the tutelage of Lucas. In addition, Lucas is sending three student-athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Marietta, Ohio.

The USTFCCCA selects the top track athlete, field athlete, head coach, and assistant coach for the eight regions in NCAA Division III outdoor track and field, 64 total awards.

The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will run from May 21-23 with a total of 688 participants in attendance. Marietta College is the host for the 2009 track and field championships.
