Fugett, Lucas, Houghton honored with CAC awards; Sea Gulls earn 36 All-CAC honors
YORK, Pa. - The Capital Athletic Conference announced its track and field awards and honors this week and Salisbury University brought home three awards and 36 All-CAC honors for the 2009 season. Junior Brandon Fugett was named the 2009 CAC Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Year while first-year coach Kevin Lucas earned 2009 CAC Men's Track and Field Coach of the Year honors. On the women's side, freshman Jennifer Houghton was named the 2009 CAC Women's Track and Field Co-Rookie of the Year.
Salisbury's men's track and field team earned 21 All-CAC honors as the Sea Gulls won their sixth straight conference title on April 18 in Fredericksburg, Va., on the campus of University of Mary Washington. The SU women's team had 15 All-CAC honorees as the maroon and gold finished second overall.
Salisbury set three conference meet records and won a combined 15 events out of a possible 40 as the men won 11 events and the women won four. The Sea Gulls also had 24 individuals earn All-CAC honors, which are awarded for a first or second place finish in any event. Three Salisbury relay teams were also named to the All-CAC team.
Fugett won the men's shot put and discus events and finished second in the hammer throw. In the shot put, the Randallstown, Md., native, set a new conference record with a throw of 16.37 meters. This is the eighth time in SU program history a Sea Gull has earned CAC Track and Field Athlete of the Year honors, the seventh time on the men's side. This is also the third year in a row and the fourth time in the past five seasons a SU men's athlete has earned this award.
Lucas earns his first CAC Coach of the Year honor in his first season at the helm for the Gulls. He helped guide the maroon and gold to the program's 11th overall CAC men's track and field title. This is the sixth straight year a Salisbury coach has earned this men's award as former head coach Jim Jones won five straight from 2004-08. Overall, SU has earned 11 CAC Men's Track and Field Coach of the Year honors.
York (Pa.) College freshman Darren McKoy was named the 2009 CAC Men's Track and Field Rookie of the Year.
Houghton swept the women's throwing events as she won the discus, hammer and shot put events. She shares the conference top rookie honor with Amanda Parshall from York (Pa.) College. Hood College senior Jessica Parrish was named 2009 CAC Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Year as she won four events. Mary Washington coach Stan Soper brought home his 14th CAC Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year honors.
Freshman Jennifer Houghton was named 2009 CAC Women's Track & Field Co-Rookie of the Year. Houghton shares the award with York (Pa.) College freshman Amanda Parshall. Houghton had a masterful performance at the CAC championships as she won first-place in the women's shot put, discus and hammer throw.
On the men's side, SU All-American Cory Beebe won the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter dash to earn two All-CAC honors. Beebe set a new conference record in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.11 seconds.
The 4x100 meter relay team established a new conference mark as the group made up of juniors Delannie Spriggs and Wayne Turner and freshmen Paul Moore and Xzavier Dickerson won the event with a time of 41.85 seconds.
Spriggs, the 2008 CAC Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Year, captured his third consecutive first-team all-conference honors in the 100-meter dash. Spriggs set a new conference record in the 100-meter dash (10.62 seconds) to break the old record set by York's Rob Powell back in 1998. The junior finished second in the 200-meter dash for the second consecutive season.
Sophomore Quentin Briscoe won the 400-meter hurdles as last season he was second in the same event. Briscoe also took home first team honors in the 4x400 meter relay with teammates; senior Zack Dickerson, junior Michael Marfut and Moore. For Dickerson he becomes the first CAC men's student-athlete to win four CAC championships in men's cross country and four CAC championships in men's track and field in a career. Moore wrapped up the day with a second place finish behind SU teammate Beebe in the 400-meter dash.
Juniors Bill Nastasiak and Christian Adami and sophomore Brandon Lane earned first-team honors for the second consecutive year in their respective events. Nastasiak won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:06.54. Adami, a second team member in '07, won the javelin throw with a distance of 54.72. Lane won the triple jump with a leap of 13.74 meters.
Senior Bobby Price was named to the second team for the second straight season in the high jump as he cleared a height of 1.97 meters.
On the women's side, Houghton and sophomore runner Masha Berge were the only Sea Gulls to be named to the first team. Berge successfully defended her CAC title in the 10,000-meter run as she finished with a time of 42:23.21.
Senior Jenn Bulger performed well at her final conference championships as she took home four All-CAC second team honors. Bulger finished second in the high jump (1.47 meters), long jump (4.94 meters), 400-meter hurdles (1:06.76) and was a member of the 4x100 meter relay team that finished second with a time of 50.41 seconds. The other members of the team include Esther Oyeneyin, junior Lindsey Metzler and freshman Lauren Foreman.
Junior Janay Johnson garnered second-team honors in the three throwing events behind Houghton in the discus (32.26 meters), hammer throw (34.77 meters) and shot put (10.70 meters). Sophomore Liz Tollett received second team honors in the 5,000-meter run as she crossed the finish line with a time of 20:09.18.
Since 2000, the SU track and field program has garnered 292 All-CAC honors between the men's and women's team.
