Salisbury makes final push to qualify for NCAA track and field championships

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Salisbury University men's and women's track and field teams completed their regular-season schedules with two meets in the last four days in a final attempt to qualify for the 2008 NCAA Division III national championships.

At the New Captain's Classic held at Christopher Newport University, last Saturday, senior Samuel Singleton set a new school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.72 seconds. Singleton broke his own record by .02 seconds set at the Duke Invitational (April 4). Sophomore Christian Adami placed first in the javelin with a distance of 52.06 meters (170 feet, 10 inches).

In the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet, on Tuesday, a pair of Sea Gulls earned second-place finishes as sophomore Justin Acker earned an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.77 seconds. Junior Jenn Bulger cleared the high jump with a leap of 1.61 meters (five feet, three and one quarter inches).

Adami improved on his throw in the Captain's Classic with a throw of 182 feet, six inches. Adami, who provisionally qualified in the javelin back in March, must now wait until Sunday to see if he will receive a chance to represent Salisbury in the NCAA championship.

In the two meets, four student-athletes completed their track and field tenures with SU as Alicia Canzanese finished fifth and sixth in the 100 and 200 meters, respectively, at CNU.

At Swarthmore, Colt Vander Vliet earned a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (54.98 seconds). Long distance standout Eric Graves notched a season best time in the 1,500 meters (3:58.80). Buck Stokes finished his career as a Sea Gull with a season best 15:52.34 in the 5,000-meter run. Junior Josh Michael, a future athletic trainer, competed in his final meet as a Gull and set a personal record in the 800-meter run (1:55.38). Sophomore Brandon Fugett tossed the shot put 14.81 meters at Swarthmore and was just off the school record. Singleton had a season best time of 22.67 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Bill Nastasiak finished the season with a season best time of 9:54.90 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase where he finished eighth overall.

The official 2008 NCAA Division III men's and women's championship fields will be announced this Sunday, May 18.  The Sea Gull men's 4x100 meter relay team has already solidified itself a spot in this season's championships as Acker, Singleton, senior Kevin Teal and sophomore Delannie Spriggs will head to Oshkosh, Wisc., for the three-day event (May 22-24).
