Salisbury earns 31 All-CAC track and field honors

YORK, Pa. - Salisbury University was well represented on the 2008 Capital Athletic Conference men's and women's track and field all-conference teams. The Sea Gulls had a combined 31 all-conference honors earned between the men's and women's track and field teams. 

Sophomore Delannie Spriggs (Owings, Md./Northern) was named the 2008 CAC Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Year as he was the conference champion in the 100-meter dash and a member of the first-place 4x100 relay team. Spriggs was second in the 200-meter dash. This is the second straight year Spriggs was named all-conference in the 100-meter dash.

This is the sixth time in program history that SU has earned the CAC Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Last season, Samuel Singleton (Baltimore, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) took home the honor for the maroon and gold as the Sea Gulls swept the three men's postseason awards.

SU coach Jim Jones was selected by his peers for the fifth season in a row as the CAC Men's Track and Field Coach of the Year. Jones guided Salisbury to a fifth straight men's CAC championship this season, a new conference record. The Sea Gulls have won 10 men's track and field conference championships since 1994.

Salisbury's 4x100 meter relay team consisted of Spriggs, Singleton, senior Kevin Teal (Westminster, Md./Westminster) and sophomore Justin Acker (Bowie, Md./Bowie) set a new conference record with a time of 41.04 seconds. Singleton was also a member of the second place 4x400 relay team which consisted of senior Colton Vander Vliet (Port Murray, N.J./West Morris Central), junior Josh Michael (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and sophomore Quentin Briscoe (Windsor Mill, Md./Western Tech).

Singleton was the CAC champion in the 400-meter dash as he set a new conference record with a time of 49.02 seconds. This is the second straight year Singleton was named all-conference in this event.

Vander Vliet and Briscoe were first and second in the 400-meter hurdles to earn all-conference honors. This is the third time in the four-year career of Vander Vliet that he was named All-CAC in this event. The other years were in 2005 and 2007.

In the long distance running events, senior Eric Graves (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) earned All-CAC honors in the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter run for the third year in a row. Sophomore Bill Nastasiak (Point Pleasant, N.J./Ocean County College) was first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:03.12 and junior Ben Thomas (Laurel, Md.) was All-CAC in the 10,000-meter run.

Salisbury also was dominate in the men's field events led by sophomore Brandon Fugett (Randallstown, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) who was the 2008 CAC champion in the shot put, discus and hammer throw. Fugett earned all-conference honors last season in the shot put.

Fellow sophomore Christian Adami (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) was named all-conference for the second straight year in the javelin. Sophomore Zachary Trenary (Salisbury, Md./Parkside),pole vault, and freshman Brandon Lane (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough), triple jump, earned their first All-CAC honors.

On the women's side, freshman Melissa Stansbury (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) earned All-CAC accolades as she won a pair of field events in shot put and discus. Her teammate Janay Johnson finished second to Stansbury in both of those events to earn all-conference honors.

For the third consecutive season junior Kelly Sullivan (Phoenix, Md./Maryvale Prep) was named All-CAC for her performance in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Salisbury sprinters Charlese Phillips (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's) and Victoria Lawson (Windsor Mill, Md./Laurel) both captured All-CAC honors for their performances in the 200 and 400-meter dash, respectively. This is the second straight year Lawson has earned conference honors in the 400-meter dash.

Freshman Masha Berge (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) took home first place in the 10,000-meter run to round out Salisbury's all-conference runners.

Jenn Bulger (Verona, N.J./Verona) repeated her honors in the long jump and also earned an all-conference selection in the high jump. Junior Rachel Knapstein (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford) repeated as All-CAC in the pole vault.

The Sea Gulls were second in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays to University of Mary Washington. The 4x100 relay team consisted of Lawson, Phillips and sophomore Ashleigh Macintosh and freshman Mandy Maruchi-Turner (North East, Md./North East). The 4x400 team featured Lawson, Bulger, seniors Alicia Canzanese (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) and Casey McInerny (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira Free Academy).

University of Mary Washington, the CAC women's track and field champions for the 15th straight year, took two of the three postseason honors. Carly Hambley repeated as the CAC Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Year while her coach Stan Soper was named CAC Coach of the Year for the 13th time. Hood College sprinter Jessica Parrish was named the CAC Rookie of the Year.

Wesley College sprinter Larry Beavers was named the CAC Men's Track and Field Rookie of the Year.
