Sea Gull swimming program falls to Eastern-Shore rival Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Salisbury University men's and women's swimming programs each fell to Eastern Shore rival Washington (Md.) College in a dual meet on Wednesday night. The SU men lost 123-83, while the women's team lost 123-77.

On the men's side, the Sea Gulls had many second-place finishes, including the highly contested race in the 100-yard freestyle event. SU junior Joe Wisda (Rockville, Md.) and Shoreman Chris Soper stuck with one another through the entire race, before Soper finished just milliseconds before Wisda at 50.36 seconds compared to Wisda's 50.72 seconds. The Sea Gulls also received second-place finishes from junior Brian Allen (Laurel, Md.) in the 1,000-yard freestyle event (11:01.60) and Tim Metcalf (Baltimore, Md.) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.07).

The women's side fared better on the individual side, as the Gulls picked up a pair of first-place finishes in two events. The women's 400-yard freestyle relay team made up of senior Maureen Gillespie (New Market, Md.), junior Katy Turner (Salisbury, Md.), sophomore Jenna Petrella (Marlton, N.J.) and freshman Christine Cooke (Rockville, Md.) finished with a time of 3:58.73 in the final women's event of the evening. Petrella, an All-CAC performer last season, also had a secondplace finish in the 50-yard freestyle at 26.64 seconds. The other first-place finish for the Gulls came in the 100-yard breaststroke event as freshman Meghan Donovan (Bowie, Md.) finished in 1:15.24 seconds, edging out teammate Kelly Closs (New Providence, N.J.) who came in second at 1:15.88.

The Sea Gulls swimming program will hit the road again for its next meet, when they travel to Kutztown, Pa. for the two-day Kutztown University Invitational on Nov. 20-21.
