ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University
men's and women's swim teams hit the road on Saturday afternoon to
face off against Capital Athletic Conference opponent St. Mary's
(Md.) College, the final regular-season CAC opponent for the Sea
Gulls. It was a close call for the men, whose strong finish in the
final event of the meet gave them a narrow 104-101 victory. The Sea
Gull women fell to the Seahawks, 133-72.
Salisbury's men (5-4, 4-2 CAC) racked up the points,
along with a slew of first and second place finishes, against St.
Mary's. The Sea Gulls were led by junior Tim
Metcalf (Baltimore, Md.), who finished first in two
events: the 100-yard freestyle (52.26 seconds) and the 200-yard
freestyle (1:53.35).
The maroon and gold trailed going into the 22nd and
final event of the day, the 200-yard freestyle relay. Salisbury
packed a 1-2 punch, with the two relay teams finishing first and
second to give the Sea Gulls the three-point victory. The
first-place relay, which was comprised of freshmen Eric
Robichaud (Annapolis, Md.) and Paul Zoli
(Fallston, Md.), as well as sophomores Jason Preston (Pasadena, Md.) and Steve Eyler (Gambrills, Md.), finished the
race with a time of 1:32.56.
The women's side (4-5, 3-3 CAC) saw an individual
first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, as sophomore
Katie Fitzenreiter (Columbia,
Md.) posted a time of 5:32.35. Additionally,
the women's relay team comprised of sophomores Kelly
Closs (New Providence, N.J.) and Jenna Petrella (Marlton, N.J.), along with
junior Katy
Turner (Salisbury, Md.) and senior Angie Hammond (York, Pa.), took first in the
200-yard freestyle relay.
The Sea Gulls will travel to Washington, D.C. on Jan. 30 to
square off against Catholic University. The meet is slated to begin
at 1 p.m.
