CAC Championships Day 2: Going into Day 3, Salisbury poised to finish strong

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's and women's swim teams, who both sat in fifth place after the first day of competition at the Capital Athletic Conference championships, dove into the second day of events looking to pile on the points and finish the season on a high note. The Sea Gull men currently sit in fourth place, while the women are in fifth place with one day of swimming left.

Due to inclement weather which made travel difficult, the first day of the meet was adjusted to eliminate preliminary rounds and clock only timed championships. Today's events were back as originally scheduled, with the preliminary rounds at 10 a.m. and the finals at 6 p.m. The events taking place tomorrow, which is also the final day of the championship meet, will be in the same format.

After 12 events the men bumped up one place, to fourth, with 246 points. The women tightened their grip on fifth place, having earned 242.5 points, and sit just 24.5 points behind York (Pa.) College. The Sea Gulls have a staggering 133-point cushion between themselves and sixth-place Gallaudet University.

It seemed as though four was the magic number for the Sea Gulls. Salisbury's relays were the highlight of the day, with both the men's and women's 200-yard medley re lay as well as the 800-yard freestyle relay teams coming in fourth place in each event. Individually, senior Mike Ferrari (Columbia, Md.) finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 1:01.25. That time was a slight improvement on the 1:01.45 he swam in the preliminary round earlier in the day.

On the women's side, sophomore Amanda Garcia (Collegeville, Pa.) had the strongest individual finish for the Gulls, grabbing fifth place in the 100-yard breaststroke as she touched the wall with a time of 1:11.14.

The maroon and gold enter the third and final day of competition looking to improve upon last year's CAC championship finish, as both the men and women took home fourth-place honors in 2009.
