CAC Championships Day 3: Men finish fourth, women fifth; several Gulls earn All-CAC honors
SALISBURY, Md. - After a long weekend of competition the Salisbury University men's and women's swim teams wrapped up the third and final day of the Capital Athletic Conference championships on Sunday evening. The teams return home with a fourth-place finish for the men, a fifth-place finish for the women and three All-CAC honors.
The Salisbury men sat in fourth place at the end of yesterday's events, trailing St. Mary's (Md.) College by 28 points. The Sea Gulls began their charge toward third place but fell just one point short, concluding the championships with 389 points. Salisbury's women maintained their hold on fifth place, finishing well ahead of Gallaudet University (151) but falling short to York (Pa.) College (415). The University of Mary Washington dominated the competition, with both the men's and women's teams securing first place.
Junior Katy Turner (Salisbury, Md.) had the Gulls' top individual performance of the day as she finished third in the 200-yard butterfly, touching the wall with a time of 2:18.00. That finish, which was a full three seconds faster than her preliminary time of 2:21.36, earned Turner All-CAC honors for the event.
On the men's side, a true team effort resulted in All-CAC nods for both the 400-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay squads. The freestyle relay, which consisted of junior Tim Metcalf (Baltimore, Md.), sophomore Steve Eyler (Gambrills, Md.) and freshmen Eric Robichaud (Annapolis, Md.) and Paul Zoli (Fallston, Md.), took third place with a time of 3:17.63. The medley team of Zoli, Robichaud, senior Mike Ferrari (Columbia, Md.) and sophomore Jason Preston (Pasadena, Md.) also finished in third place, posting a time of 3:44.63.
The meet marks the end of Salisbury's 2009-10 season. The men finished with a record of 6-4, while the women posted a 5-5 record.
