Washington sweeps Salisbury, final event determines men's meet

SALISBURY, Md. - The last event determined the winner of Wednesday's men's swim meet between Salisbury University and Eastern Shore rival Washington (Md.) College. The Shoremen 200-meter freestyle relay team won the night's final event by sixteen-hundredths of a second to give Washington the 107-98 victory at the Maggs Center pool.

Washington (1-1) has won 18 straight meets against the Sea Gulls. The Shoremen held a 96-92 lead over the Sea Gulls heading into the final event. SU's 200-meter free relay team consisted of Jason Preston, Ian Branigan, John Lorman and Brad Buckley as they finished with a time of 1:42.04. Washington's relay team won with a time of 1:41.88.

Salisbury's women's team suffered its third loss as Washington (4-1) won all 11 events in the 138-67 victory. The Shorewomen extend their win streak over the Sea Gulls to 22 straight meets.

The men's meet came down to the final second and hundredths of seconds in several events. Salisbury (2-3) won three individual events and placed second and third in the two relays. Washington won eight events on the night. In the individual races the top five swimmers receive team points. SU placed three swimmers in the top five in seven of the nine individual events.

Sophomore Mike Radloff won the night's fourth overall event, the 800-meter free, with a time of 9:26.67 to secure nine points for the Sea Gulls. Radloff was nearly six seconds ahead of Washington's Matt Violette. The next men's event brought a lot of enthusiasm to the packed fan section as Salisbury senior Benjamin Overholt out touched Washington's Nick Longworth at the wall in the 200-meter free. Overholt won the exhilarating race with a time of 2:03.82. Longworth checked in with a time of 2:04.62. SU junior Mike Ferrari lost a heartbreaker in the 200 IM as Washington's Austin Auger (2:22.39) beat Ferrari (2:22.65) by less than half of a second. Overholt had his own close call in the 100-meter free as Shoremen Tim Beadell won the event to just beat Overholt. Ferrari turned the tables on the Shoremen in the second to last event as he won the 200-meter breaststroke (1:10.68).

On the women's side, the Sea Gulls (2-3) placed second in four individual events and two relays. Salisbury placed three swimmers in the top five in five of the nine individual events. SU swept second, third and fourth place in two events. In the 800-meter free the trio of Allie Ziegler (10:32.04), Jessica Cahill (10:39.12) and Jenelle Irwin (10:39.33) finished behind Washington's Rachel Glassner. It was a mad dash in the 50-meter free as Raienne South (28.77 seconds), Laura Kordzikowski (29.78) and Katie Leffner (30.75) placed behind Washington's Kathy Gerhart (28.51). Salisbury had a close race in the 100-meter backstroke as Robin Stone finished second to Washington's Morgan Phillips by less than half of a second. Sophomore Katy Turner was the other Sea Gull to place second in an individual event. Turner finished the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:08.63.

Salisbury is off this weekend but will next participate in the Kutztown Invitational on November 21-22 in Kutztown, Pa.
