Ferrari, Turner named CAC Swimming Athletes of the Week

YORK, Pa. - The Capital Athletic Conference announced its weekly conference swimming athlete of the week awards on Tuesday and Salisbury University took home both honors. Junior Mike Ferrari was named the men's swimming recipient and sophomore Katy Turner was named the women's swimming recipient for the week of February 3. SU now has three swimmers that have been honored with this award this season.

Last weekend, the Salisbury women's team claimed a 114-91 victory over Catholic while the men dropped a 118-87 decision to the visiting Cardinals on Senior Day. SU posted nine-first place finishes, nine second-place finishes, and 13 third-place finishes during the meet.

Ferrari is receiving the award for the second time this season as he was honored on January 13. The Columbia, Md., native claimed two first-place honors in the meet. Ferrari edged out Catholic's Sean Murphy to claim the first victory on the day for the SU men in the 200-meter IM (2:22.50). He also won another close race in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:11.38.

Turner recieves the award for the first time in her two-year career. She is a dual recipient of the honor and shares it with Gallaudet's Carlisle Washington. The Salisbury, Md., native has been incredible in the past two Sea Gull home meets. Turner took top honors and broke the team record in the 100-meter butterfly (1:08.41), a record that had stood for nine years.  It was her second-straight meet with a record-breaking performance, after setting the school and pool mark in the 200-meter butterfly (2:31.33) on Jan. 24 vs. St. Mary's.  Turner also took second place in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:20.66).

The Sea Gulls will have two weeks before they swim in the CAC championships, which are scheduled to begin on February 13 at St. Mary's (Md.). Last season, the men took home third-place honors while the women claimed a fourth-place finish.
