SU men's swimming takes down St. Mary's, women fall short

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's swimming team won a pivotal Capital Athletic Conference meet Saturday afternoon on the road at St. Mary's (Md.) College. The Sea Gull men (6-4, 4-2 CAC) won seven of the 11 events to defeat the Seahawks, 127-78. This is the forth straight win for the SU men's team. The victory pushes the maroon and gold into a tie for third-place in the CAC with York (Pa.) College.

Salisbury's women's team (5-5, 3-3 CAC) lost 120-85 as the Seahawks (4-3, 2-2 CAC) won nine of the 11 events. The two teams now stand at .500 in conference competition and sit behind Marymount (Va.) and Mary Washington, respectively.

The Sea Gull men's team was led by freshman Drew Robichaud, who won two individual events, in the 1,000 yard freestyle (10:41.49) and 200 yard back (2:06.21). SU swept the 50 free as senior Cole Mangum won the event with a time of 22.71 seconds. He was followed by junior Brad Buckley (23.31), junior Ian Branigan (23.31) and freshman John Lorman (24.22). Sophomore Mike Ferrari won the 200 breast (2:18.97) as he edged out teammate Sean Snee (2:27.92). Ferrari was second in the 200 IM (2:08.52) as he lost to Seahawk sophomore Cam Buckingham (2:06.67). The Seahawks (1-5, 0-4 CAC) swept the 200 fly as Mike Kerr won with a time of 2:12.38. SU followed that with a complete sweep of the 100 free. Senior Ross Spangler won with a time of 50.82 seconds as he out touched teammate Benjamin Overholt. (50.90) by .08 of a second. Buckley was third with a time of 52.33. The Sea Gulls swept the two relay events as the maroon and gold won the 400 free and 400 medley relay. The 400 free relay team consisted of Overholt, Spangler, Buckley and Mangum beat SMC's team by 11 seconds with a time of 3:24.03. The 400 medley relay team consisted of senior Matt Anderson, freshman Chris Smith, senior Chris McGaunn and Branigan.

SU freshman Becky Akers led the Sea Gull women's team as she won two events for the maroon and gold. Akers was first in the 500 freestyle (5:32.33) and in the 1,000 free (11:10.63). Junior Raienne South was second in the 200 free (2:05.57) and third in the 200 fly (2:29.11). Sophomore Maureen Gillespie was second in the 100 free (59.18) and the 200 breast (2:37.33). In the 200 back SU sophomore Lindsay Southworth was second (2:26.07) followed by fellow sophomores Kelsey Rada (2:30.61) and Sarah Duffy (2:32.90). Sophomore Angie Hammond just missed a first-place finish in the 50 free as she recorded a time of 27.09 seconds. Freshman Katy Turner was second in the 200 IM (2:19.10). The SU 400 free and medley relay teams took second place. The 400 medley relay team of Southworth, sophomore Jessica Krauss, Hammond and Turner clocked a time of 4:24.15. The 400 free relay team of Turner, junior Laura Kordzikowski, Gillespie and South were a little over a second away from first with a time of 3:54.92.

Salisbury will close out its regular-season schedule next Saturday, January 26, on the road in Washington, D.C., as the Sea Gulls face Catholic University of America at 1 p.m. The Sea Gulls will then focus on the CAC championships which will begin on February 15 at St. Mary's (Md.).
