WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Salisbury University
swimming program claimed its first-ever dual-meet victory over
Catholic University of America on Saturday afternoon in Washington,
D.C., in non-conference action. The Sea Gull men's team beat the
Cardinals, 159-102, while the women's team won 141-120. This was
the final regular-season meet before the Capital Athletic
Conference championships which will be held in three weeks in St.
Mary's City, Md.
The Salisbury men's team (7-4) took first place in nine of the
day's 14 events and twice finished with the first and second spots.
SU sophomore Sean Snee took first place in the
1,000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:53.99 as he edged Catholic
freshman Brian Shelton by nearly 12 seconds. Fellow sophomore
Mike Ferrari won the 100 breaststroke (1:03.92)
and the 200 breaststroke (2:21.58). Freshman Drew
Robichaud took first in the 200 IM (2:11.36) and the 200
backstroke (2:05.76). The CAC men's swimming athlete of the week
just missed first-place in the 100 back as he was edged out by a
tenth of second to CUA's Dan Finnegan (59.50).
SU seniors Cole Mangum and Ross
Spangler led the sprinters with first and second place
finishes respectively in the 50 free. Mangum clocked in at 22.37
seconds while Spangler was a second back at 23.42. Mangum also
grabbed a second place finish in the 100 free (51.86). The men's
400 free relay team of Benjamin Overholt,
Brad Buckley, Spangler and Mangum came in first
with a time of 3:24.42.
On the women's side (6-5) the maroon and gold took first place
in eight of 14 total events. Freshman Becky Akers
finished first in both the 500 and 1,000 yard free (11:10.07).
Aker's finished 11 seconds ahead of SU junior Raienne
South in the 500 free with a time of 5:34.50. South
claimed first place in the 200 free (2:05.77) and was second in the
200 IM (2:26.48) where she finished behind freshman Katy
Turner (2:24.16). Turner dominated the two butterfly
events as she finished first in the 100 fly (1:03.83) and 200 fly
(2:19.6) races. Sophomore Lindsay Southworth took
first in the 100 back (1:06.52).
Salisbury's men's and women's 400 medley relay teams took home
first to cap a dominant day for the maroon and gold.
