ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University
men's and women's swim teams closed out the second day of the 2008
Capital Athletic Conference championships on Saturday evening at
St. Mary's (Md.) College still in fourth place but both teams have
their sights on third with one day to go.
The SU men's team is just six points shy of third-place
Marymount (Va.) University as the Saints hold a 297 to 291 lead
over the Sea Gulls. University of Mary Washington (575.5 points)
and York (Pa.) College (417) sit in the top two spots,
respectively. Salisbury's women's team is in a similar position as
the Sea Gulls (299.5) trail third-place Marymount (326) by 26.5
points with 12 events left out of 36. Mary Washington (633) is
running away with the competition as host St. Mary's (351.5) sits a
distant second.
Sophomore Mike Ferrari set his second school
record, in as many days, as he broke the one-minute mark in the 100
yard breaststroke with a time of 59.92 as he finished second behind
Mary Washington's Kennard Smith (59.64). Ferrari wasn't done there
as he was a member of the 200 medley relay team along with senior
Cole Mangum, junior Brad Buckley
and junior Ian Branigan, who improved on last
year's mark to set a new school record of 1:40.09 as the Gulls
placed fourth.
Salisbury's women's 800 free relay team of junior Laura
Kordzikowski, sophomore Angie Hammond,
sophomore Maureen Gillespie and junior
Raienne South finished third with a time of
8:24.99. Sophomore Lindsay Southworth had a strong
fifth-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.14.
Overall, the Sea Gulls completed the day with six top-five finishes
in either individual or team events.
The competition will conclude Sunday, beginning with the
preliminary races at 10 a.m. and the championship races at 6 p.m.
Salisbury will look to close-in on Marymount for third place in
both the men's and women's standings. Last season, the SU men's
team finished a program best third while the women's team placed
fifth.
Prior to the evening swims, the CAC will honor the senior
members of each team in its traditional final day ceremony.
