Collins, Powell named CAC Players of the Week

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Capital Athletic Conference announced its weekly softball awards on Monday and Salisbury University swept the two awards following a four-win weekend while hosting the Salisbury University Softball Tournament.

Senior LeAnne Collins was named the league's Player of the Week while junior Shannon Powell claimed the Pitcher of the Week honors.

Collins batted .800 in Salisbury's four victories, reaching base in 15 of 17 plate appearances, for an .867 on-base percentage. Of her eight hits, four went for extra bases with two doubles, a triple, and a home run. The triple was the 12th of Collins' career, which ties her for the program record.

Collins is the second Sea Gull in as many weeks to earn the Player of the Week award, with sophomore Dakotah Fraley picking up the honor last week.

Powell started two of Salisbury's four wins last week in the circle, recording two complete-game shutouts. In an 8-0 win against Washington, Powell surrendered only three hits while striking out four. The next day, against Clarkson University, Powell struck out a career-high-tying six, while giving up just four hits in five innings.

The Sea Gulls remain home this weekend for six games, beginning with a doubleheader against Lynchburg College on Friday, March 9 beginning at 1 p.m.
