Softball to travel to Virginia Wesleyan for NCAA tournament regional

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 2 Salisbury University softball team has been picked to travel to Virginia Wesleyan College for an NCAA Division III Softball Tournament Regional, the organization announced during its selection show on Monday afternoon.

Salisbury will be making its 21st NCAA tournament appearance after claiming the program's 19th Capital Athletic Conference championship on April 23.

The Sea Gulls will take on Haverford College in the opening round of the event on Friday, May 13. The Fords earned the Centennial Conference's automatic bid into the tournament with the conference championship on Sunday, May 8. The other first-round match pits No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan and Presidents' Athletic Conference champions Saint Vincent College.

The double-elimination event is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, May 15, with the advancing team heading to a best-of-three super regional next weekend against the advancing team out of a regional hosted by Christopher Newport University.

Of the four teams in the Virginia Wesleyan regional, Salisbury has only played the Marlins this year, splitting a season-opening doubleheader on February 20. The Sea Gulls have never met Saint Vincent in softball and have only taken on Haverford once, with Salisbury claiming a 6-2 win on May 11, 2006 during an NCAA regional at the SU Softball Field.

Game times for this weekend are to be announced, visit www.suseagulls.com for information on the games as they become available.
