How we got here
The Sea Gulls earned an at-large bid into the tournament following a 30-6 regular season and hosted one of 16 NCAA regionals last weekend. Salisbury won its three games in the regional, defeating McDaniel College and topping No. 10 Virginia Wesleyan College twice to advance to this weekend's event. Senior pitcher Rachel Johnson was named the Most Outstanding Player of the event while senior Angela Malgieri, and juniors Kim Dorsey, Annah Brittingham, and Molly Simpson were named to the All-Tournament Team.
How they got here
The Captains come into this weekend with a 30-7 record, having earned an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament, by winning the program's second Capital Athletic Conference tournament championship. Christopher Newport hosted an NCAA regional last weekend, winning three times, against Salem College once, and twice against Randolph-Macon College to claim the title and make it to this weekend. Hanah Marshall was named the Most Outstanding Player while Scoop Simon, Tori Clarke, and Hannah Cook were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Friday's meeting marks the 68th time that these two programs will come together, with the Captains holding a slight 35-30-2 advantage. Christopher Newport has picked up the win in the last three meetings, including a doubleheader sweep at the SU Softball Field on April 4 this season. At the SU Softball Field, all time, the teams are split with a 14-14-1 mark.
Last time we met
The teams' most recent meeting came in the CAC championship game when the Captains were able to jump out to an early 3-0 lead before holding on for the 7-4 victory. Salisbury was held scoreless over the first six innings before coming up with four runs in the top of the seventh and brought the potential tying run to the plate, but could not draw even.
Scouting the Captains
Christopher Newport has been paced this season by Tori Clarke and Brittney Walters who have each hit over .400 for the season, while Walters has a team-high .717 slugging percentage with 14 doubles, five home runs, and a triple. Marshall and Krista Lewis have handled the duties in the circle throughout the year for the Captains, with Marshall sporting a 16-2 record with a 2.63 ERA this year and Lewis 14-5 with a 4.10 ERA.
The teams will be back in action for game two of the series on Saturday, May 16, beginning at 1 p.m. The third game of the series, if necessary, will begin at 3:30 p.m., on Saturday. The winner of the series advances to the NCAA Division III Softball Championship next week in Salem, Virginia.
