YORK, Pa. – The Capital Athletic Conference announced its weekly awards and Salisbury University junior Rachel Johnson was named the league's softball Pitcher of the Week after the Sea Gulls opened the season with two wins on Sunday.
Johnson tossed a no-hitter in her season debut, in a 1-0 win against the State University of New York at Cortland. The Preston, Maryland native allowed just one Red Dragon base runner in her seven innings, while striking out 13. The only runner that reached came on a leadoff walk in the second inning, but would not reach scoring position as Johnson struck out the next three batters; she recorded the first nine outs of the game by strikeout.
The no-hitter is the 11th Johnson has been involved in, and is the ninth solo no-no of her career, trying Erika Brittingham for the most in program history for a career.
Johnson and the No. 2 Sea Gulls hit the road on Tuesday, March 10, traveling to No. 10 Virginia Wesleyan College for a doubleheader slated to begin at 2 p.m.
