Johnson named ECAC South Pitcher of the Year; Four earn first-team honors

CENTREVILLE, Mass. - Salisbury University softball junior Rachel Johnson was named the ECAC South Pitcher of the Year, the league recently announced. Johnson was also named a First Team All-Star, as were classmates Rebecca Hoey and Paige Knussman, along with sophomore Kim Dorsey.

Johnson finished the season with a 29-4 record with a 1.35 earned run average and recorded three saves. The Preston, Md., native finished in the top 30 in all of Division III in ERA. She struck out 295 batters in 197 innings, starting 29 of her 37 appearances. Johnson finished the season with 10.48 strikeouts per game, good for fifth in the nation.

Johnson's battery mate, Hoey, started in each of the Sea Gulls' 49 contests and was third on the team with a .389 average. The Bound Brook, N.J., native tied for third on the team with seven home runs and knocked in 35. Hoey scored 26 runs and hit 12 doubles on the season. Hoey guided the staff from behind the plate to a 1.42 ERA, good for sixth in the nation.

Knussman finished sixth in the nation with a .516 batting average for the season. She reached base 55.3 percent of the time, good for 15th in the country, and ended the year with a .834 slugging percentage. The Easton, Md., native slugged 11 home runs, second most on the squad, and tied for the team-lead with 61 RBIs. Knussman hit a team-high 15 doubles and scored 47 times.

Dorsey filled the power gap in the Sea Gull lineup and led the team with 15 home runs, tied for seventh most in Division III play. The Baltimore, Md., native finished the season with a .422 average, good for second on the team. She reached base 50 percent of the time and led the team with a .844 slugging percentage. Dorsey tied Knussman for the team lead with 61 RBIs and scored a team-high 63 runs. The shortstop hit a team-leading three triples and was second on the team with 14 doubles.
