Softball ranked No. 1 in latest NFCA top 25 poll
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – On the strength of its season-opening 14-game winning streak, the Salisbury University softball team has climbed to the top spot in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association top 25 poll, the organization announced on Wednesday morning.
Salisbury's 14-0 start matches the best start in program history as the Sea Gulls received five first-place votes in the most recent poll and 195 points to climb to No. 1 from the No. 3 position, where they had sat since the preseason poll.
The previous top two teams, defending national champion Tufts University and Montclair State University each lost one game last week and slid down one spot each. Tufts earned the remaining three first-place votes and 191 points in this week's poll while Montclair State grabbed 185 points.
The top five is completed by Central (Iowa) College, with 176 points, and East Texas Baptist University, with 173 points.
Salisbury reached the No. 1 spot last season, for the final two regular-season polls, and entered the NCAA tournament with that ranking.
The Sea Gulls will be back in action this Sunday, March 23, traveling for their first Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season, at league newcomer No. 18 Christopher Newport University. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
