SALEM, Va. – After more than seven complete innings, the contest between top-seeded Salisbury University and fourth-seeded Christopher Newport University was suspended due to rain in the top of the eighth inning with Salisbury at the plate in a winners' bracket game of the NCAA Salem Regional.
Christopher Newport scored the first run of the game, in the second inning, as Sarbrina Hill hit a solo shot over the center field fence with two outs before senior Michelle Gravdahl gave SU the lead the following inning with a two-run blast after senior Sarah Alpaugh singled through the left side to reach first.
Sophomore pitcher Rachel Johnson would quiet the Captains until the seventh inning when both teams put runs on the board.
In the top of the seventh, Salisbury would add its third run on the board. Freshman Paige Knussman delivered a single up the middle in her pinch-hit opportunity before junior Harley Hill laid down a bunt single to put two runners on. A walk by Gravdahl loaded the bases as senior Hannah Mills took to the batter's box. The senior shortstop sent a high fly ball to center field, deep enough to allow junior Angelia McDowell to score for the 3-1 lead.
Newport would battle back in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases as Johnson would walk in a run, to make it 3-2, before a fielder's choice gave the Captains the game-tying run to enter extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Salisbury would load the bases with Gravdahl up to bat with two outs before the game was halted due to heavy rain and wind. The contest was suspended until 9 a.m., tomorrow morning.
