YORK, Pa. – For the first time this season, the No. 9 Salisbury University softball team swept the Capital Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week awards as senior shortstop Hannah Mills was named the CAC Player of the Week and sophomore pitcher Rachel Johnson was named the CAC Pitcher of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Mills went 10-for-13 for the Sea Gulls last week as Salisbury picked up four wins, all on the road. She had a .769 average while blasting two home runs against No. 21 Christopher Newport University and collecting five doubles and one triple on the week. Mills brought in 10 RBIs while reaching home six times and ended the week with a 1.769 slugging percentage and .813 on-base percentage.
For the fourth time this season, Johnson was named the CAC Pitcher of the Week after going 3-0 in her three appearances in the circle. The Preston, Md., native went the distance in game one against CNU and then came in to toss the final four innings of the nightcap to earn her second win of the day. Johnson pitched 15 innings in which she allowed only two earned runs while scattering 10 hits and striking out 24 batters.
Salisbury (20-2, 2-0 CAC) will return to action on Saturday, April 6 when it hosts the University of Mary Washington in a conference doubleheader at 12:30 p.m. The Sea Gulls will then face Washington (Md.) College in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at the SU Softball Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
